NEWS RELEASE FROM IAAI (International)
London Fire Brigade Personnel Receive Recognition Awards from International Association of Arson Investigators
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) has presented the 2011 George H. Parker Distinguished Service Award to Borough Commander Peter Mansi of the London Fire Brigade.
The IAAI George H. Parker Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals who have shown outstanding service, effort and direction to the purposes and objectives of the IAAI and is presented annually during the IAAI’s Officer Installation Banquet and Awards Ceremony, held in conjunction with their Annual Training Conference. This award has been presented annually since 1966 and was subsequently named after its original recipient, Mr. Parker. Mr. Mansi is the first British representative to be presented this award.
Commander Mansi is currently assigned as the Borough Commander of the City of London and as the Manager of the Fire Investigation Group. He was nominated based on his outstanding efforts as an advocate of the IAAI and its mission to improve fire investigation capabilities and arson awareness globally. He has worked actively throughout Europe, Africa and Asia assisting in training initiatives focused on improving forensic fire investigation capabilities and his efforts ultimately resulted in the formation of IAAI Chapters in France and Bulgaria. Additionally, his efforts while providing training assistance have lead to increased interest in fire investigation and IAAI Chapter formation in Finland, Oman, and Ghana.
Commander Mansi has served as the President of the United Kingdom Chapter of the IAAI (IAAI-UK) since its inception in 2003 and has effectively grown the chapter to in excess of 900 member participants. He currently serves on the IAAI Board of Directors and also serves as the Chairman of the IAAI Chapters Committee and is a member of the IAAI Certified Fire Investigator Committee.
His efforts on behalf of the IAAI-UK chapter led to the implementation of the IAAI Certified Fire Investigator program (IAAI-CFI) in the United Kingdom and to date 13 applicants have successfully challenged the exam protocols, including 5 candidates from the London Fire Brigade.
IAAI President David Nichols stated “Peter has truly been a valuable member of the IAAI and has served as a great ambassador for our organization during our concentrated efforts to expand globally. We greatly appreciate his efforts and he is highly deserving of this recognition.”
Additional award recipients included London Fire Brigade employee Claire Purton, an Arson Task Force Practitioner. Ms. Purton was presented an Award of Recognition for her outstanding efforts in organizing, hosting, and facilitating the IAAI Midyear board meeting and IAAI UK Annual Training Conference held in January 2011.
This was the first occasion the IAAI held its midyear board meeting in conjunction with an international training event and, due largely to the efforts of Ms. Purton, the event was a huge success with over 170 Delegates in attendance during the conference, including representatives from the UK, USA, Canada, Finland, Bulgaria, and France. The conference was supported by the London Fire Brigade and held at the Southwark Fire Training Centre in London.
The IAAI UK was also presented the 2011 Outstanding Chapter Award for their dedicated support and service to the IAAI during their board meeting and the training event. This is the second time in their brief history that the IAAI UK has received this prestigious award. London
London Fire Brigade Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “Peter has worked tirelessly in the field of fire investigation and I am delighted that his work has been recognised by a highly regarded international organisation. I am also extremely pleased for Claire Purton who as an Arson Task Force practitioner carries out vital work in London highlighting trends in fires and working with the councils to remove potential arson targets.”
IAAI President Nichols stated “Fire and arson are truly global problems that we must work together to find effective solutions. We are very appreciative of the support the London Fire Brigade gives to Mr. Mansi, Ms. Purton, other fire brigade employees and the IAAI-UK Chapter in fulfilling the mission of the IAAI to improve fire investigation capabilities and arson awareness worldwide. Without the dedicated support of employers like the London Fire Brigade, our organizations (IAAI and IAAI UK) could not be successful. ”
According to statistics published by the Communities and Local Government, there are in excess of 53,000 deliberately set fires annually in the United Kingdom which result in approximately 93 deaths and 2,200 non fatal casualties. http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/statistics/pdf/1780609.pdf
The International Association of Arson Investigators is comprised of approximately 7,000 members worldwide and is dedicated to the advancement of the forensic fire investigation industry though the design, development, and delivery of innovative training and education programs; and is the sponsor of a number of Internationally recognized certification/professional designation programs based on guiding industry standards including the IAAI Certified Fire Investigator and IAAI Fire Investigation Technician.
